Mandarin Expressions综合技能强化班

PROGRAMME | School Years Programmes

Primary 5 to Primary 6
2 hour sessions, once per week

Mandarin Expressions is a dynamic programme that supports children in meeting the demands of the Ministry of Education’s Primary 5 and 6 Chinese curriculum, ensuring they approach their Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) feeling calm, composed and confident—while equipping them with communication skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom, into secondary school and beyond.

The programme focuses on strengthening students’ proficiency in four key areas recognised as essential:

  • Application of language skills
  • Composition writing
  • Reading comprehension
  • Oral examination readiness
  • Application of language skills
  • Composition writing
  • Reading comprehension
  • Oral examination readiness

Through creative and empowering learning opportunities, students build not only academic skills but also social and emotional confidence—learning to express themselves with colour, clarity and conviction, whether in the classroom, at home or among friends.

Foundational Language Application
Building a strong foundation in language application is key to PSLE success. Each week, students engage with two carefully designed worksheets that sharpen their understanding of question types and reinforce their grasp of vocabulary, phrases and sentence structures. This purposeful practice not only hones their ability to select accurate answers but also builds the confidence needed for examination readiness.

Key Elements of the Programme

Oral Language Activities
Students build their oral communication skills, along with the ability to organise their thoughts and ideas effectively, through discussions, vocabulary exercises, themed games and presentation activities. Every child receives individual opportunities to read aloud in class, developing the fluency and expressiveness needed to bring a passage to life. Through video stimulus, students engage in guided conversations with their teacher—recounting what they have viewed, sharing personal experiences related to the topic and articulating their own viewpoints. With consistent practice, their confidence to speak in both formal and informal settings grows naturally—preparing them not just for oral examinations, but for a lifetime of meaningful conversations.

Literature and Picture Analysis
Effective communication begins with the ability to interpret—to make sense of the tone, language and layers of meaning within a text or image. Using stories, poems and pictures, students explore structure, uncover meaning and connect with the emotions conveyed through different literary forms.

Writing Skills
Students learn to structure their writing across a range of styles, employing literary and rhetorical devices such as personification, hyperbole and analogy to bring freshness and precision to their expression. The curriculum addresses both Standard Chinese (CL) and Higher Chinese (HCL) examination formats, with a primary focus on picture-based composition, supported by practice in topic-based essays, story completion and situational writing. As students build a rich bank of vocabulary and apt phrases, they learn to apply these tools with accuracy—crafting compositions that are not only fluent and vivid but also coherent and purposeful—a skill that extends far beyond examination scripts into clear thinking and confident expression for life.

Comprehension
Aligned closely with the PSLE Chinese examination format, students develop the skills to navigate comprehension passages with confidence. They learn to identify main ideas, expand their vocabulary and master targeted strategies for addressing different question types. Each practice session strengthens their ability to read with insight and respond with precision—nurturing a habit of thoughtful engagement that extends beyond examination passages into the wider world of ideas.

Beyond the PSLE
At Mandarin Expressions, we believe that language is not merely a subject to be tested, but a lifelong tool for connection, expression and growth. Our students leave us not only PSLE-ready, but equipped with the confidence to speak their minds, share their stories and navigate the world with words.
